Raypak gas pool heaters

Smell gas or hear a CO alarm? Leave first.

If you smell gas, a carbon monoxide (CO) alarm sounds, or anyone may have symptoms of CO poisoning, leave first and call 911 from a safe place. Do not use switches, phones, or anything that could make a spark nearby. Then call your gas utility or propane company.

Look up a message by model

Suncoast repairs and installs Raypak gas pool heaters that run on natural gas or propane. We work at homes in Sarasota and Manatee Counties. Colin confirms the exact model and your address before he books the work. Raypak is changing some of its heater lines, so the exact label on your heater matters. Suncoast is an independent service company. We are not a Raypak authorized dealer, warranty center, or manufacturer-certified service provider.

Raypak repair

Tell Colin what the heater is doing. If it has a display, read any message word for word. The message is a starting point, not a part number. Colin checks the heater, the water flow and the gas supply on site. He explains what he found and gives you a price. Pool heater repair

Raypak replacement or new install

A replacement can be a current Raypak model or another option. The review covers the fuel, the size, the gas supply, the pad and how the new heater connects. Colin quotes after that review. Installation and replacement

Which Raypak heater do you have?

On October 14, 2026, Raypak's residential pool and spa heater page listed these gas heaters:

  • AVIA and AVIA HD with NiTek. Raypak shows new versions of both. It also shows earlier versions of both marked "Retiring Soon."
  • Digital. A gas pool and spa heater.
  • Above Ground. A gas heater for above-ground pools and spas.

Old and new AVIA versions share a name, so copy the full model from the label. Do not guess from the cabinet.

About Raypak's AVIA warranty

Raypak's pool warranty page (checked October 14, 2026) lists a 3-year parts and labor warranty for AVIA 264 and 404 residential gas heaters. The page lists it for both replacement and new builds. That coverage depends on the full terms in Raypak's limited warranty. Those terms include Raypak's installation requirements. Raypak decides what it covers. Suncoast is not a Raypak warranty center.

What does a Raypak heater message mean?

Raypak gas pool heaters with a digital display show short phrases, such as Water Sw Open. Some phrases are normal steps, like No Demand. Others report a fault. The same phrase can mean something else on another model. A phrase points to what the heater sensed, not to a failed part. The message lookup below explains each phrase by model, with the manual page.

The Digital and the AVIA can both show Ign 60 min Delay, but the cause differs. On an AVIA, it comes after three failed tries to light the burner in one call for heat (AVIA manual, p. 36). That alone does not show why. Raypak's guide for it checks the wiring, the gas supply, the gas valve and the spark igniter (p. 51).

On a Digital heater, the manual lists this message for just one control setup inside the heater. There it means the pilot kept going out. A pilot is a small flame that lights the main burner. The screen also switches back and forth with Main Ign Failure (Digital manual, p. 28). Write down both messages and the model. Ask a technician to find the cause.

Message lookup by model

Find your model, then your message. Each card gives the exact words, what they mean, what the manual checks, what you can safely note, and the page it comes from. A message is a clue. It does not prove which part failed. A call for heat is when the control asks the heater to warm the water. Lockout means the heater stops trying for a set time or until it is reset.

Raypak Digital 206A, 266A, 336A and 406A

The Digital lights a small pilot flame first. The pilot then lights the main burner. The pilot is lit automatically.

Water Sw Open

Fault
Applies to
Raypak Digital 206A to 406A
What it means
The water pressure switch is open while the heater is asked to heat.
What the manual checks
Raypak gives an owner list for a heater that will not fire. It starts with the time clock and a full pump strainer basket. Next come a dirty filter and a pump that has lost its prime (stopped moving water).
What you can safely note
Follow only the owner steps in your pump and filter manuals.
Technician's part
Ask a technician about everything else on the list.

Ign 60 min Delay

Fault
Applies to
Raypak Digital 206A to 406A
What it means
On a Digital, the manual lists this for one specific control setup inside the heater. There it means the pilot kept going out, and the screen takes turns with Main Ign Failure. The heater waits 60 minutes before it tries again.
What the manual checks
The message alone does not show why the pilot went out.
What you can safely note
Write down both messages and the model. Do not open the heater to check its setup.
Technician's part
A technician finds the cause.

Clock/Fireman Sw

Status
Applies to
Raypak Digital 206A to 406A
What it means
The time clock or fireman switch circuit is open. A time clock connects to the heater through this circuit. When a time clock is wired in, Raypak says this shows when the clock has turned off the call for heat.
What the manual checks
Raypak lists it with the active faults. Its time clock note explains why it can be expected.
What you can safely note
Is a timer or pool control set to stop heating at this time?
Technician's part
If it shows when the clock should be calling for heat, ask a technician. Do not check the wiring yourself.

Applies to
Raypak AVIA 264 and 404, not 264B or 404B
What it means
A two-minute wait while the heater checks water pressure and flow.
What the manual checks
None needed.
What you can safely note
Did it move on after about two minutes?
Technician's part
Not needed for this message alone.

No Demand

Normal
Applies to
Raypak AVIA 264 and 404, not 264B or 404B
What it means
The water is as warm as you set it, or warmer.
What the manual checks
None needed.
What you can safely note
What is the set temperature?
Technician's part
Not needed for this message alone.

Vent Sw Open

Fault
Applies to
Raypak AVIA 264 and 404, not 264B or 404B
What it means
The vent air switch is open.
What the manual checks
Raypak says to check the vent for a blockage.
What you can safely note
From where you stand, is anything on or against the vent? Do not reach in.
Technician's part
Ask a technician to do the vent check.

Air SW Open

Fault
Applies to
Raypak AVIA 264 and 404, not 264B or 404B
What it means
The air pressure switch is open.
What the manual checks
Raypak says to check the air inlet for a blockage.
What you can safely note
From where you stand, are the air openings clear? Do not reach in.
Technician's part
Ask a technician to do the air inlet check.

Ign 60 min Delay

Fault
Applies to
Raypak AVIA 264 and 404, not 264B or 404B
What it means
On an AVIA, three tries to light the burner failed during one call for heat. The heater then waits 60 minutes before it tries again.
What the manual checks
Raypak's guide for it checks the wiring, the gas supply, the gas valve and the spark igniter.
What you can safely note
If you smell gas, leave first and call from a safe place. If not, note the time it showed.
Technician's part
Each check is technician work.

Call Service

Fault
Applies to
Raypak AVIA 264 and 404, not 264B or 404B
What it means
Faults keep coming back.
What the manual checks
Raypak says the heater, gas, vent and water systems may need a check. It says to contact service support.
What you can safely note
Write down any other messages you saw before it.
Technician's part
A technician reviews the fault history.

Planning a new Raypak heater: questions to settle

These questions come from Raypak's manuals. They show what the installer must check. They are not steps to do yourself. Gas, vent and wiring work belongs to a qualified installer, under local code.

Natural gas or propane?
Raypak's AVIA manual sizes the gas pipe by model and fuel. It lists kits to change the gas type of the AVIA 264A and 404A, and says only a qualified agency should do it. That does not cover AVIA B models. The installer checks the full model and the gas supply.Raypak AVIA manual (100-10000111 Rev 12), pages 19 and 90
Pilot or direct ignition?
A Raypak Digital uses an automatically lit pilot. An AVIA has no pilot and lights the burner directly. A problem that sounds the same on both can have different causes.Raypak AVIA manual (100-10000111 Rev 12), page 46; Raypak Digital manual (241236 Rev 50), page 32
Will a pool control run an AVIA?
Raypak says a remote control may only switch the AVIA on and off. A control that sends its own power to the heater will not work and may damage the circuit board. Name the control when you call.Raypak AVIA manual (100-10000111 Rev 12), page 37
Will a time clock run it?
On an AVIA, Raypak says the time clock should turn off the call for heat 15 to 20 minutes before the pool pump shuts off. On a Digital, the manual recommends running the pump at least 5 minutes after the heater turns off, to carry away leftover heat.Raypak AVIA manual (100-10000111 Rev 12), page 39; Raypak Digital manual (241236 Rev 50), page 5
An Above Ground heater on propane?
Raypak says not to use small 5, 10 or 20 gallon propane tanks, like barbecue tanks, to supply this heater.Raypak Above Ground manual (241519 Rev 14), page 12
Will you use the Raymote app?
On the AVIA, the Raymote Wi-Fi module works with 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only.Raypak AVIA manual (100-10000111 Rev 12), page 57

Safety first, then photos

If you smell gas, see smoke or fire, or think carbon monoxide is possible, do not stay to take photos. Move everyone away. Then call from a safe place. If you see smoke or fire, call 911. If carbon monoxide is possible, get to fresh air and call 911. If you smell gas and the heater uses natural gas, call 911 and your gas utility. If you smell gas and the heater uses propane, call your propane company, or 911 or the fire department.

When none of that applies, send a wide photo of the heater with its label in frame. Then send a close photo of any outside label or display. Give the fuel only if a label states it. Do not open panels or remove screws.

What a repair visit costs

A repair visit is a service call. You hear the fee before the visit. It pays for Colin's first hour of on-site checking and testing. It is due even if you turn down the repair. After that you get a total-price quote, good for 15 days from the date it is issued. No repair or installation work starts until you approve that price. Full fee and quote rules
